His research focus was gradually shifting from photography in expanded field to media art & theory and lately to social conditions of the artists, residencies, artistic research in academia and beyond. Since 2013 he is active in artistic research field when he did post-doc at Vilnius Academy of Arts. He is member of various networks (SAR, EARN, Creator Doctus, etc.) and editorial boards of journals (Acoustic Space (Riga), Landing (Vilnius), .able journal (Paris), etc.).

He is also actively publishing on artistic research and art theory and history. He has written first book on Artistic Research from Eastern-Central European perspective: Mapping Artistic Research. Towards Diagrammatic Knowing (2018, VDA Press). He has co-edited three volumes “(In)dependent Contemporary Art Histories. Artist-run Initiatives in Lithuania 1980–2022”. From 2024 to 2027 he is running an excellency research project with artists and philosophers where try to evaluate the rise and fall of “artistic” in artistic research from perspective of humanities, art and design practices and pedagogies.

Vytautas Michelkevičius is also curating various artistic research projects and symposia. In 2015 he was a curator of Lithuanian Pavilion in Venice Biennale (Dainius Liškevičius project “Museum”). .From 2010 to 2019 he served as artistic director of Nida Art Colony of Vilnius Academy of Arts and he was an active participant in running Nida Doctoral School. Since 2021 Vytautas Michelkevičius together with two artists-researchers is running in Vilnius a post-media art festival www.umede.lt
